Just drag a photo from an album into document!

In AppleWorks, make sure you select the Arrow tool before you drag or import an image onto the document . If you don't see the Arrow Tool, click the red toolbox on the bottom left of the document. The Tools should appear on the left hand side of the document.

In Word, you may wish to wrap the graphic after you import it. To do this, double click the graphic, select the Layout tab and choose either square, tight, behind or in front of text.

Importing from an iPhoto Compatible Camera

  • connect the camera to your computer via the USB port
  • turn on your camera
  • launch iPhoto, if necessary
  • click the Import button near the bottom center of the screen (see above)
  • click Import on the bottom right hand corner of the screen
  • when the import is done, you can disconnect the camera and turn it off

Importing from a Disk or Server

  • go to File/Import
  • navigate to the file you wish to import and click import
    OR to select multiple images:
  • hold down the command (apple key) to select more than one photo
OR to select an entire folder of images:
  • navigate to the desired folder and click import
  • iPhoto will import your photos to the photo library.

All imported images will be downloaded to the Photo Library. Photos can be arranged in a number of ways. You can provide image titles for future reference. To do so, select a photo and use the information panel (if it is not showing, click the small i) to name and rotate (rectangle with arrow) each image. Use the View menu to arrange photos by titles, keywords or film rolls (downloads).

Information Panel

The image on the left shows a group of photos and their titles. Each photo can be associated and organized by keywords.

Organizing Images via Keywords

Assigning keywords (such as third period, back to school, or field day), allows you to search and view photos accordingly. Make sure you are in Organize mode by clicking the Organize button underneath the photo window.

Creating and Assigning Keywords

  • go to Photos/Keyword
  • select New from the Keyword drop down menu
  • type in desired keyword (such as Science Project)
  • select the photo or photos you wish to assign to this keyword
  • select the desired keyword
  • click Assign

Searching for Photos with the Same Keyword

  • select a keyword for your search
  • click Search
  • click Show All to see all the photos again

iPhoto Modes

iPhoto has 4 modes: Import, Organize, Edit and Book. Each one allows you to do different things with your photos. To access each mode, click the appropriate button on the iPhoto toolbar.

Organizing with Albums

Once you have imported your photos, you may wish to organize them by creating one or more albums to be used in slide shows, books, or printouts. Click the Organize button to do so.

  • click the new album button at the bottom left hand corner of the iPhoto corner (the plus sign on the image above)
  • enter a name for your album (science project, field trip...)
  • select the Photo Library
  • drag the desired image(s) to the album of choice
  • in the screen shot on the left, the selected image is being copied to the Barkley library
  • to remove a photo, click on it and hit the delete key

New Feature: To rename a group of photos simultaneously, first select them. Then go to the Photo Menu, and select Batch Change. Here you can change the title, the date or add comments.

The photo library contains all imported photos. The photo albums contain aliases, or pointers to the files. Deleting a photo from an album will not delete it from the library. Deleting it from the library will delete it from all the albums as well.

Editing a Picture

To edit a picture, select it and click the Edit button underneath the photo window. Editing changes the original photo along with its album counterparts. If you wish to maintain the original photo, you can make a duplicate by going to Photo/ Duplicate. You can also revert to an original photo state via Photo/Revert to Original. Zoom in when necessary using the zoom slider in the lower right hand side of the iPhoto window. Note: in some versions the Revert and Duplicate commands are in the File Menu.
