About Your Home Folder

In System X's multi-user stucture, each user has a personal Home folder on the hard drive. You can view your Home folder contents by clicking on the Home icon in any window's toolbar. Although the Home folder on the left has been customized somewhat, Apple pre-configures this folder by including the sub-folders listed below.

  • Desktop
  • Documents
  • Library
  • Movies
  • Music
  • Pictures
  • Public
  • Shared
  • Sites

These folders present a convenient and secure way to organize your docments. You can also add your own folders and other items as wished.

Tip: The most confusing thing for many users is that there is another Documents folder on the top level of the hard drive. For security reasons, always be sure to save to the Documents folder in your Home folder. In addition, the Library contains many system files and should be left alone.

Saving in Your Home Folder

The first time you save a new document, a dialog sheet drops down from the top of your document window. If it appears in its abbreviated form as below, click the down arrow to the right of the Where drop down menu in order to have complete control over the saving process.

Type the desired name in the Save As box.

Use the Where drop down menu to navigate to the Home folder. Note that this menu contains three sets of places you can navigate to easily. Some are standard, some are favorites (which can be customized) and some are recent places.

At this point you could navigate to any one of the folders within your Home folder. In the picture below, the user would be saving to the Documents folder in the Home folder. Alternatively, you could click New Folder to create a new folder in which to save. You could also click Add to Favorites, which would add the current folder choice to the Where drop down menu favorite places for easy access. When you are done, click Save.

Tip: If you wish to save to a file server, you will first need to move the horizontal blue scroll bar all the way to the left, and choose the appropriate volume.

Viewing What You Saved

Double click your hard drive and click the Home button on the window's toolbar.

If you are in column view you will see the contents of the Home folder on the right. In icon or list view, you will still need to double click the Home icon to see what it contains. Click (or double click, depending on your view) the Documents icon to see its contents.
