Troubleshooting

OS X

When your computer freezes, there are a number of things you can do.

  • Have patience, wait a minute and see if the problem takes care of itself. Sometimes it does!
  • Make sure the mouse and keyboard are plugged in properly, if they aren't it may appear as though your computer is frozen. If this doesn't work, follow the directions below.

  • Hold down the apple, option and escape keys simultaneously to force quit (above).
  • Choose the application that appears to be frozen and click Force Quit. You will get a message stating that you will lose any unsaved changes. Click OK.
  • You should be able to resume work at this time. If you can't you will need to restart your machine in one of the following manners:
    • Hold down the apple, control and power keys simultaneously until your computer restarts.
    • For many machines (laptops, emacs) hold down the power button until the computer shuts down (a few seconds). Hit the power button to restart.
    • For an iMac, find the small button with the triangular icon on the side of your computer, and press it until your computer restarts.
    • For a G-3 tower, look underneath the power button and find a small button with a triangular icon, press it until your machine restarts.
