AppleWorks uses frames to integrate different types of content within a document. These frames can be moved and sized for layout purposes. They are extremely useful for making complex layouts such as Newsletters. If you wish to include a spreadsheet, paint, draw, or text frame within another type of document it is easy to do.
Open an AppleWorks document (a Draw document is an easy place to start) and make sure the Tools Palette is showing by selecting Show Tools from the Window menu, or clicking the red Tools Palette icon at the bottom left of the AppleWorks document.
Click in the Tools Palette to select the type of Frame you wish to use. The figure on the left, row by row, includes text, spreadsheet, paint, and table frame tools. The arrow is used to select frames within a document. You can not edit a frame unless it is selected.
After you have selected your frame tool, drag out the frame within your document. Notice that the Tools Palette changes according to the type of frame selected.
Hints:
- To create a frame that is the same type as the document you are working in, hold down the option key while dragging. For instance, to create a text frame in a Word Processing document, hold down the option key as you drag.
- Paint frames can not be edited once they have been deselected.
- When using a database, frames can only be made in layout mode.
- You must type in a text box before deselecting it or it will disappear.
Working With and Editing Frames
- Unless a frame is on a Paint Document it can be moved by selecting it with the arrow tool, and dragging. Selected frames can be re-sized by dragging a corner. Text boxes will change according to the amount of text entered.
- Selecting an area in a Paint Document with either the Lasso or Rectangular Selection tool allows it to be moved. Use the Transform Menu to scale the selection.
- Frames can be edited by entering them, to do so:
- Double click the frame if it isn't selected, and then begin editing.
- Click the frame once if it is already selected, and then begin editing.
Changing frame's attributes such as border, width and background color, go to Window/Show Accents.
